As you all know what is going on right now Schools are out, parents are working from home and the government has issues social distancing to avoid the spread of Covid-19.
That means a lot of parents will have a lot of time to fill during the day. It is hard to keep young kids occupied when you can’t run to the stores, aquariums, parks, and play places. Cabin fever sets in pretty quickly and even for you, stay at home moms who are used to kids being home it can get overwhelming when you can’t break up the day with Target runs.
I hate to admit this but when playing with Aria I usually have a podcast running in my air pods. I am very A.D.D. and I have to have multiple things going on or I get stir crazy. That is how I stay sane through homeschool, and all-day play.
I have made a list of things that we have been doing for the past years to pass our days. Now I am not perfect, I get annoyed, yell at my child, and occasionally give myself a time out. Kids are really exhausting some days, and they get bored easily.
Let’s get started!
We love water beads! If the weather is bad we put them in the tub and play with them there. When it is good weather we put the water beads in the water table and enjoy the outdoors. They are really inexpensive and therapeutic to play with.
You can make your own play-doh, cloud sand, etc, or you can just order some on Amazon if you don’t own any already. I pull out all my bakeware and we sit and cut out shapes. You can find cute play-doh print outs to laminate for kids to create shapes and monsters on. Play-doh and Disney music on Spotify can last us up to 2 hours. It is a great time burner.
We love legos. They are another great time killer in our home. Sometimes we will have building competitions and see who can build the coolest house or castle. I do like to give Aria independent play for both our sanity and she loves having the lego bin out at that time and just let her imagination run wild. Amazon has a bunch for inexpensive and they offer Duplo blocks for those with really young kids or babies.
Aria loves Cosmic Kids Yoga on Youtube. We normally don’t let her watch YouTube but this is one exception because it keeps her active and it has a lot of fun yoga stories for her to follow. She loves the Pokemon episode and the Halloween episode. She does all the movements the best she can and it really gets some of there wiggles out. It also gives you a break for 20 minutes to clean up food, toys or whatever chaos you need to tend to. This one is a huge one for us.
Laminated Educational Printouts
Before signing her up for Upstart we did home preschool. I made a lot of activities and bought a laminator to protect them. She loves playing with them now and actually enjoys playing with them for a while. File folder games are another great way to have some quiet time with young kids. I will link some of my favorite printouts from my homeschool and link you to my printables Pinterest board. This is the laminator I use I got from Amazon and I love it, here are the sheets I get for the machine. I highly recommend laminating these. Kids are destructive lol.
Balls and Ikea Tunnel Tent
As much as I loathe and detest these balls (clean up sucks) they are a great time killer. We got a small tent and tunnel from Ikea and we dump the balls into the tent and let her crawl and toss the balls around. When Aria was younger she could do that all day if I let her, but now we can get maybe 45 minutes out of it but it’s another way to pass the time and get some wiggles out.
We have an Ikea easel she loves to color on, we also got a huge roll of craft paper from Home Depot that is fun to paint on. If we have music going and I color with Aria we can get an hour or so out of this activity. She loves to paint.
We limit screen time but she is allowed games on her iPad, a movie, and some games on the Switch. We don’t usually allow more than 2 hours a day, but if it’s one of those days…you know what I’m talking about….then we might be watching movies and chilling most of the day.
It’s spring here in Utah so the weather is everywhere. Some days it’s 67 degrees and sunny, others it’s 32 degrees and snowing. It really depends but getting the kids outside whenever possible is another great way to get the wiggles out. Trampolines or bounce houses are a great way to wear out the kids. There are so many fun outdoor toys I have been researching and will link you to that you can order Amazon or Target.
Baking is messy but it can really pass the time. Aria and I love making simple cake mix cupcakes and listen to music. We made a brain cake together (here) that was a lot of fun.
A while back I made Aria (these) princess aprons. She loves dressing up in them and listening to music and dancing. Target always has inexpensive dress-up items we have collected over the years as well as her old Halloween costumes. For boys, there’s some pretty cool dress up capes and hero costumes. This is really applicable for any age and any gender.
Read A Thon
Grab everyone a snack, books, and blankets and have a read a ton. For the younger kids, you can use picture books or those busy books with the toys in them. Aria loves the Bob books right now, she is learning to read them herself and they are great for getting your preschooler to read.
I hope this list helps. These are things we love to do with Aria and it sure helps pass the day. Have fun and good luck!
